rumi roaming: contemporary engagements and interventions

Permanent URI for this collection

This collection includes 16 audio files and 7 video files, produced as integral parts of the multi-platform (in print, and in virtual and real spaces), multi-disciplinary, and multi-language anthology ‘rumi roaming: contemporary engagements and interventions’, curated and edited by Gita Hashemi. This online archive is accessible from the print book by QR codes. All works are originally produced for the ‘rumi roaming’ anthology.

‘rumi roaming’ juxtaposes new translations of some of Rumi’s poems with creative non-fiction, poetry, scholarly essays, photo essays, and videos that engage with his work through decolonial reflections on language, human connections, place, and spirituality. Artists, poets, scholars, and thinkers from different disciplines and cultural backgrounds take off from Rumi’s poetry to cover a wide range of interconnected and urgent themes, including global displacements and relations to land and water, translingual poetics and translation politics, indigenous language revitalization and diasporic language reclamation, and interrogations of spirituality, healing, and social justice.

Read and recorded by some of the anthology’s contributors, the audio files include readings of poetry by Rumi, in Persian or English translation, and poetry by the contributors in English, Persian, or Arabic. These poems are also included in the print book.

The video files include video performance (1), live poetry and dance video (1), art videos (4) and a video recording of an online working session. They have companion texts in the print book.

The story of the slave girl who satisfied her sexual urges with her mistress’s donkey, having trained it like goat and bear to engage in sexual intercourse in the manner of men. She would put a gourd on the donkey’s penis, so that it would not pass beyond a certain measurement. The mistress learned of the intercourse, but not the detail of the gourd. She sent the slave girl far away under a pretext, coupled with the donkey without the gourd and perished shamefully. oneness of being: open fields
    (SubversivePress, 2022) Hashemi, Gita
Part 4 of a tetralogy, this short video is a moving meditation on the beauty of the natural forms. It foregrounds the playful and changing harmony of seasonal light and the mesmerizing colours it creates. The imagery is punctuated with selected verses from Rumi that encourage contemplation and the feeling of interconnectedness. Each part is based on a season. Creating abstraction from nature, each short video captures colours, shapes and movements to convey the dominant feelings of the season. Moving from dawn to dusk, the sequencing is entirely driven by changes in the intensity and colour of light over the day’s course. The selected poems emphasize the interconnection of all beings and all seasons. They articulate the essence of life as the eternal cycles of light and shadow, and suggest that their reflection in our internal landscape animates our experience of the outer world. Produced by SubversivePress for the anthology ‘rumi roaming: contemporary engagements and interventions."
