Immigrants in the Global Economy

Permanent URI for this collection

This project examines opportunities and obstacles encountered by recent immigrants and refugees in the new knowledge-based economy. We interviewed 300 Caribbean and Latin American workers in the GTA who arrived in Canada between 1990 and 2004. In our research we ask: How are newcomers affected by the wider trend towards precarious employment? What strategies do they implement on the job and as families to address employment challenges? How do migrants' transnational commitments impact their relationship to local labour markets and social institutions?
