This paper presents a theoretical analysis of an economy from the perspective of systems and hierarchy theory. Economic systems are examined in two dimensions – the material and the functional – each of which is regarded as one aspect of a dual hierarchy. The issue of proper scaling is addressed. Throughout this examination, efforts are made to compare the organisation of economic systems with that of ecosystems. Finally, similarities and differences between the two are discussed.en_US
