The Method is the Portal: Afrofuturism, Speculative Construction, and Black Psychological Liberation

Abstract

This thesis contends that psychology’s foundational promise of understanding the human remains governed by colonial inheritances that delimit what can be recognized as mind, evidence, and possibility. Through a critical excavation of the figure of Man and the epistemic architectures of colonial modernity, the work theorizes space, time, and story as racialized coordinates that structure Black life’s legibility within the discipline. Building on the legacy of Black Psychology as a counter-epistemic rupture, the thesis advances Afrofuturism as a liberatory framework that reconfigures psychological inquiry through speculative imagination, alternative temporalities, and creative world-building. Central to this intervention is the development of Speculative Construction – an original Afrofuturist methodology structured by the orientations of Drift (space), Echo (time), and Pulse (story) – which treats imagination as a legitimate site of psychological knowledge production. The thesis further proposes a spatiotemporal–narrative validation system to ensure methodological rigor and accountability. Ultimately, this work shifts the ground of psychological research from critique to creative construction, inviting ongoing collective development of methods and theories that center Black liberation and possibility.
