dc.description.abstractThe following paper is written support for the STAY IN TOUCH exhibition on display at Special Projects Gallery at York University from April 3rd to April 7th 2017. In this body of work, I use processes of weaving, knitting, crochet, embroidery and photography to touch the past and to feel reciprocally touched by it. I explore the ability of touch to imaginatively transport a person to another time or place. By embroidering images from my collection of family photographs I emphasize the tactile and ephemeral nature of memory and the photographic object. In working with family history and personal memory I am considering the gradual disappearance of my own history. Through repetitious acts of making, I engage with remembered gestures and body memory. Drawing from personal experiences, this paper focuses on mnemonic storytelling to reimagine memories of touching and feeling objects and spaces.
