Item Open Access Conversations with Scholarly Communication Librarians: Results of a CARL funded study(2013-12-05) Fernandez, Leila; Burpee, K. JaneItem Open Access New Frontiers in Open Access for Collection Development: Perspectives from Canadian Research Libraries(IFLA, 2013-08) Burpee, K. JaneAs the push for open access (OA) burgeons around the globe, it is important to examine OA as it relates to collection development practices. Canada has its own particular set of characteristics and approaches to service delivery based on its history and context. Like our global colleagues, opportunities for collection development in Canada include the support of OA journals, repositories, monographs and electronic theses. The strengthening of OA in Canada is tied closely with other issues. Political and educational realities as well as geographic spread are affecting the way the movement is strengthening and impacting collection development practices. In this context, we share the results of a study examining the scholarly communication landscape in Canadian research libraries. The results of interviews with librarians, who are leaders in scholarly communication activities at their own institutions, showcase the prominent role OA plays in enhancing collections at Canadian institutions. Collaboration and the role of cooperative collection development are covered. The paper concludes with recommendations for strengthening access to open scholarship in libraries regardless of their geographic location.Item Open Access No time to scale back: gleaning best practices for library involvement in scholarly communication in Canadian research libraries.(2013-12-05) Fernandez, Leila; Burpee, K. JaneAn in-depth understanding of librarian roles in scholarly communication and the organizational structure in which they operate has not been fully investigated within Canadian research institutions. We report the results of semi-structured telephone interviews with 29 librarians from institutions belonging to the Canadian Association of Research Libraries. The study provides recommendations for libraries looking to develop new programs or enrich existing programs.Interviews provided participating librarians with an opportunity to discuss and reflect on their roles in the context of recent developments in scholarly communication and to provide input on how their libraries are committing to this area of librarianship. Participants in both practitioner and administrative roles provided a diversity of opinions related to scholarly communication and its future development in Canada. The study provides recommendations for libraries looking to develop new programs or enrich existing programs in scholarly communication
