ABSTRACT In this paper, "computerized teaching" refers to any teaching that uses multimedia tools such as CDs or the Internet. The word "interactive" is more or less indiscriminately used in the marketing of computerized tools and is thus in great need of a more restrictive definition, especially in an educational context. An accurate definition will allow us to measure to what extent and in what way computerized educational tools are interactive. We will demonstrate on the basis of a variety of examples from secondlanguage and translation teaching what it takes to have a truly interactive educational tool. CDs will thus appear as disappointingly uninteractive, whereas the Internet, when its communication power is used optimally, will appear as a useful tool, as it is able to recreate the kind of interaction instructors strive for in their classrooms.
