Parce que le roman d’Ondaatje est écrit de façon jazzée, sa forme musicale est elle aussi créatrice de sens, mais quelle relation entretient le rythme avec le sens du texte anglais, et comment cette relation est-elle affectée par la traduction en français ? Cet article vise à répondre à ces deux questions-clés à travers l’analyse de divers exemples, partant de la phrase en tant qu’unité sémantique comprise entre deux pauses ou silences.Using the translation and re-translation into French of Coming Through Slaughter by Michael Ondaatje as a starting point, this article focuses on the musicality of the English text – its rhythm and its melody which the latter disrupts a lot – and on the impact of the translators’ performances, in an hermeneutic sense, on the two French texts. Because Ondaatje’s novel is written in a jazzistic way, its musical form also creates meaning but what is the relationship between the rhythm and the sense of the English text and how is this relationship affected by the translation into French?
