Item Open Access When the Time Comes, Will You be Ready? Strategies and Tools to Build a Framework for Information Literacy and Assessment. Three hour workshop presented at Workshop on Instruction in Library Use (WILU), UBC Okanagan, Kelowna, B.C., May 2008(14-05-08) Bell, Colleen; Bury, Sophie; Mgwigwi, ThumekaIf you had an opportunity to give a presentation on information literacy for an administrative body at your institution, what would your message be? This workshop examined resources, strategies, documents and opportunities that can be drawn upon when building a framework for curriculum integrated information literacy. Thumeka and I focused on the importance of information literacy assessment in building such a framework.Item Open Access Altered anterior visual system development following early monocular enucleation(Elsevier Inc., 01/11/2013) Kelly, Krista; McKetton, Larissa; Schneider, Keith; Gallie, Brenda; Steeves, JenniferPurpose Retinoblastoma is a rare eye cancer that generally occurs before 5 years of age and often results in enucleation (surgical removal) of the cancerous eye. In the present study, we sought to determine the consequences of early monocular enucleation on the morphological development of the anterior visual pathway including the optic chiasm and lateral geniculate nucleus. Methods A group of adults who had one eye enucleated early in life due to retinoblastoma was compared to binocularly intact controls. Although structural changes have previously been reported in late enucleation, we also collected data from one late enucleated participant to compare to our early enucleated participants. Measurements of the optic nerves, optic chiasm, optic tracts and lateral geniculate nuclei were evaluated from T1 weighted and proton density weighted images collected from each participant. Results The early monocular enucleation group exhibited overall degeneration of the anterior visual system compared to controls. Surprisingly, however, optic tract diameter and geniculate volume decreases were less severe contralateral to the remaining eye. Consistent with previous research, the late enucleated participant showed no asymmetry and significantly larger volume decreases in both geniculate nuclei compared to controls. Conclusions The novel finding of an asymmetry in morphology of the anterior visual system following long-term survival from early monocular enucleation indicates altered postnatal visual development. Possible mechanisms behind this altered development include recruitment of deafferented cells by crossing nasal fibres and/or geniculate cell retention via feedback from primary visual cortex. These data highlight the importance of balanced binocular input during postnatal maturation for typical anterior visual system morphology.Item Open Access RSS Feeds from STM Databases: Innovative Possibilities(Issues in Science & Technology Librarianship, ACRL, Science and Technology Section, May-10) Nariani, RajivReally Simple Syndication (RSS) feeds have been used in academic libraries to follow new information posted on blogs, wikis and web sites. Science, Technology and Medicine (STM) databases also offer RSS feeds which can be used by science librarians to track research being conducted in their subject areas. The knowledge gained from these constantly updated sources can help in collection development activities. RSS feeds can also be used to highlight grant-funded research and monitor trends in Open Access publishing. This article documents some unique ways of using RSS feeds from STM databases.Item Open Access WizFolio(Ingenta, Oct-10) Nariani, RajivItem Open Access Edith Fowke tapes no.1-no.95(York University Libraries, 1972) Fowke, Edith FultonItem Open Access Classification of Documents(York University Libraries, 1975) Monty, VivienneItem Open Access A guide to microform sets at York University Libraries(Scott Library. The object of the study was to understand the information-seeking behavior of Indian scientists and information professionals and the use of the Internet in their work. In order to determine subject specific differences in Internet use, participants included physicists, mathematicians, chemists, biomedical scientists and information professionals. This article also examines the perceptions of scientists on recent developments in scholarly communication and explores the role of Indian librarians and information professionals in the electronic environment.Item Open Access Staffing the University Library for the Next Millenium(1999) Olshen, ToniItem Open Access User Perceptions of Current Awareness Services: a Faculty Survey(Science & Technology Section, Association of College & Reserach Libraries, 2002) Fernandez, LeilaA survey was sent out to science faculty at York University to determine researchers' use of current awareness services. Responses indicate that faculty use a variety of approaches to keep up to date with their research and that there is overall satisfaction with these services. The implications of their choices are discussed with particular reference to future library services.Item Open Access Bridging the Two Cultures: A Collaborative Approach to Managing Electronic Resources(Association of college and research libraries, 2002) Dupuis, John; Ryan, PattiThis article highlights an example of cross-discipline collaboration in an academic library, and describes a collaborative approach to managing electronic resources that is used at York University Libraries. In this model, a science librarian and a humanities/social sciences librarian work together to co-ordinate and carry out the various tasks associated with managing electronic resources. Both the benefits and challenges of cross-discipline collaboration are considered, with particular attention to the usefulness of collaboration in managing electronic resources.Item Open Access By the Bootstraps: Building an Engineering Collection from the Ground Up(2002-06-16) Dupuis, JohnYork University is a large urban university in Toronto, Canada. While mostly known as an institution with a strong focus on the arts, humanities and social sciences, York has a set of small but active science programs. As part of a plan to increase the emphasis on applied sciences, York initiated its first engineering programs in Computer, Space and Geomatics Engineering and Engineering Physics. In the fall of 2001, York welcomed its first ever engineering students into these new programs. This poster session will present the experiences and strategies of a new librarian building a library presence for these new programs. Also covered will be the methods used to build journal, reference and monograph collections as well as efforts to forge links with the new faculty and students. All these activities are situated within an environment of “Big Deals,” budget cuts and severe financial restrictions that have become the norm in many universities.Item Open Access New Alliances in Scholarly Publishing(Canadian Library Association, 2003) Fernandez, LeilaItem Open Access Portals for Persons with Disabilities(Ontario Library Association, 2005) Wakaruk, Amanda; Majekodunmi, Norda
