A dialect atlas is a book of maps containing data from a linguistic area or selected geolinguistic interpretations illustrating dialect relationships, but an online dialect atlas is much more: it is a repository of data, a broad means to access and process the data, and a dynamic presentation of results in multiple forms. Modern Information Technology has changed the way we present and use dialect atlases. Here is a proposal for a general online dialect atlas, and an account of some of the experiences that have led us to this proposal.
